About Kidney Health
Chronic Kidney Disease :
A Silent Epidemic

- CKD affects ~10% of the population, and the risk increases with age.
- Over 40% of people aged 70+ have chronic kidney damage.
- It’s often called a “silent epidemic” because symptoms appear very late—usually only after more than 70% of kidney function is lost.
- CKD is diagnosed via the glomerular filtration rate (GFR).
- Albuminuria (protein in urine) is an early warning sign—it can signal kidney damage even when GFR is still normal, helping detect and treat CKD early to slow progression.
- CKD is the 10th leading cause of death globally, up from 17th in 1990.
- It is projected to become:
- 5th by 2040
- 3rd by 2050
- 2nd by 2100 (in Europe, where life expectancy is high)
