12 Risk Factors
8. Living with one kidney
Some individuals are born with only one kidney, while others may lose a kidney due to accidents, medical interventions, or kidney donation.
For those living with a single kidney, including living kidney donors, regular monitoring of kidney health is helpful for risk management.

With proper care, living donors generally face a low risk of complications. Conversely, if regular check-ups do not take place, conditions such as high blood pressure could develop without being properly treated, which may affect kidney health.
Additionally, kidney removal related to illegal organ trade can have serious physical and emotional consequences, both for donor and recipient, underscoring the importance of ethical medical practices and support for those affected. Physical risks are increased by lack of proper assessment of kidney health prior to illegal organ trade and lack of proper follow-up thereafter.
